The Victory by Anne Stevenson

I thought you were my victory
though you cut me like a knife
when I brought you out of my body
into your life.

Tiny antagonist, gory,
blue as a bruise. The stains
of your cloud of glory
bled from my veins.

How can you dare, blind thing,
blank insect eyes?
You barb the air. You sting
with bladed cries.

Snail. Scary knot of desires.
Hungry snarl. Small son.
Why do I have to love you?
How have you won?

The victory in the poem is being in love with this unknown person, but the defeat is when she starts comparing the knife cutting them to their lover doing something that would make her feel like she was "cut like a knife". This love is making her doubt and ask question, "how can you dare, why do i have to love you?, how have you won?" This is showing how powerful that love can be to some people because she was so much in love with this person when she found out what this lover has done all these feelings start entering her body and she doesn't understand why this has occurred to her. The final two lines show defeat "why do i have to love you?, How have you won?" The love she had for this person is becoming a defeat because they do not share the love with her, she has lost because there is no love. The victory will never be there until she has received the love from this lover.
